Choose by the task that must survive
List the few functions that would materially affect the trip, such as receiving a bank code, contacting lodging, opening a ticket, or using navigation. Confirm each function against the connection and account it actually needs.
- For home-number SMS, ask the home carrier about inbound texts in China and ask the sending service which recovery routes it accepts.
- For overseas apps, require a current routing or service-access statement for the exact plan; the word roaming or eSIM is not enough.
- For hotspot, top-up, or data sharing, read the named package terms instead of transferring a rule from another product.
- For a Chinese local number, confirm that the exact mobile product supplies one and that the intended service accepts it.
Build a truthful fallback
- Keep the second connection configured only if the device makers and carriers confirm that the lines can coexist as intended.
- Know which line is used for mobile data and which number remains attached to important accounts; do not assume the phone will switch safely by itself.
- Save plan names, carrier support routes, lodging details, and essential confirmations offline.
- Test the functions available before departure, then re-check the active connection after arrival. A home test cannot prove foreign-network performance.

Is roaming always simpler than a travel eSIM?
No. It can preserve an existing line, but activation, account status, routing, charges, and service behavior still depend on the home carrier and exact package.
