An OTP goes to the phone number, email address, or in-app channel registered with the service. Buying an eSIM does not redirect those codes. Start with the accounts you may need after landing, then check the recovery details shown by each bank, wallet, airline, or booking service.
- Home-number SMS: ask your home carrier whether that line can receive texts while you are in China and what account, roaming, or device conditions apply.
- Travel-eSIM SMS: require the exact plan listing to state that it includes a phone number and incoming SMS; data-only service is not evidence of either feature.
- Email or in-app verification: confirm that the service itself offers that route and that you can open it without depending on the same locked account.
Separate the travel-data line from the home SMS line
On a dual-SIM phone, the travel eSIM can be the data line while the home line remains the number attached to existing accounts. That arrangement can be useful, but it does not guarantee that the home line will register on a network, receive a code, or avoid carrier charges.
- Confirm the phone supports the intended two-line arrangement and is not carrier-locked.
- Follow the phone maker's and both carriers' current instructions for selecting a data line and managing roaming.
- Keep recovery codes or another service-approved recovery method offline where the account offers one.
Prepare for a code that does not arrive
- Read the destination shown on the verification screen before requesting another code; a masked number or email can reveal which path is being used.
- Check the responsible service's official status and support instructions instead of repeatedly requesting codes or changing account details while locked out.
- Use a recovery method that the service has already accepted. A second data plan is not an SMS fallback when the code still goes to the unavailable home line.
- Keep critical booking details, lodging contacts, and arrival directions offline so an OTP failure does not also block the first journey from the airport.

Does a data-only eSIM receive texts sent to my home number?
No. The code is still addressed to your home number. Whether that line can receive it in China depends on your device setup, home carrier, account state, and the sender's verification rules.
Does every China travel eSIM include a Chinese phone number?
No. Confirm the exact plan's current listing. Do not infer a local number, calling, or SMS support from the word eSIM or from working mobile data.
