How do I travel in China with elderly parents?

Reviewed by Reviewed Aug 9, 2026

Prepare the confirmed hotel details for the simplest arrival path

The arrival check creates a driver card only from provider-confirmed Chinese details and otherwise gives you the exact verification gap to close.

Prepare my arrival details

Turn needs into operator questions

  • State the exact help needed: walking distance, stairs, wheelchair dimensions, boarding transfer, luggage, hearing or vision support, seating, or rest breaks.
  • Ask each operator what must be reserved, by when, where to meet staff, and what happens during a connection.
  • Ask the hotel to confirm step-free entry, lift access, room layout, and the route from drop-off to reception; request current photos when a detail is critical.

Know what official services do—and do not—prove

China Railway says some large stations provide priority service for elderly, sick, disabled, pregnant, infant, and child passengers, and that some stations provide wheelchair service; it tells travellers to consult the station for details. The Civil Aviation Administration of China is strengthening end-to-end support for disabled air passengers. Neither statement verifies the exact station, flight, transfer, vehicle, hotel, or travel date in your itinerary.

  • Confirm each rail segment and transfer with 12306 or the station rather than assuming one reservation covers the whole route.
  • Confirm airline and airport assistance with the operating carrier and exact airport.
  • Keep a door-to-door arrival alternative if the planned transfer, lift, or assistance path is unavailable.

Prepare the first day and health boundary

  • Keep the provider-confirmed hotel name, full address, and phone in Chinese on paper and offline.
  • Carry regular medication in the travel-day bag and ask the clinician and relevant Chinese embassy about legality, quantity, documentation, storage, and time-zone instructions.
  • Keep insurer and emergency contacts available to every adult in the group without putting medical or identity details in a public URL.
This is trip-planning guidance, not medical or accessibility certification. The traveller, clinician, operator, insurer, and property each confirm the part they control.
