Do not infer point-of-use safety

Shanghai's rules cover centralized suppliers, secondary water-supply managers, and hygiene supervision. They do not let this page verify a particular room's tap on a particular day. Follow any current municipal notice and the property's own documented drinking-water instructions.

For drinking and food preparation

If the tap's drinking-water status is not verified, use sealed bottled water or correctly boiled water for drinking and food preparation. This page does not make a blanket medical claim about brushing teeth, sensitive health conditions, or a specific building's plumbing.

If you boil water

The WHO says heating water to a rolling boil is sufficient to inactivate pathogenic bacteria, viruses, and protozoa. Use a clean vessel and prevent recontamination after boiling. Boiling does not establish that every possible chemical contaminant has been removed.

If you use bottled water

Choose a sealed container from a normal retailer and check the seal before drinking. The price, availability, and payment method are not guaranteed by this page.
