How should a foreign visitor book China train tickets?

Check the first-day setup around the train journey
Use the booking checklist above for the rail order. Check my trip covers the separate Entry, Phone, Payment, and Arrival work without turning the booking into a feasibility verdict.
Prepare the booking record before searching
- Write the exact departure and arrival stations, not only the city names. Similar station names can represent different journeys and transfer plans.
- Use the valid passport that the passenger will carry. Enter the name, document type, and number consistently with the channel's current field instructions.
- List acceptable dates, trains, seat classes, and station alternatives before sales open. Do not build the whole trip around one unissued train.
- Choose which party will own changes and refunds: the official 12306 route or the intermediary whose order you place.
Confirm issuance before arranging the rest of the trip
- Read the final passenger, date, train number, exact stations, seat class, price, fee, and change or refund terms before payment.
- After payment, confirm the order says the ticket is issued rather than merely requested, queued, or awaiting action.
- Save the issued order and the operator's current instructions offline. An itinerary sheet or reimbursement receipt is not the boarding document described by 12306.
- Keep the original valid passport used for the ticket. The official FAQ says passengers use that document for station entry, exit, and boarding.
Recover from a failed or uncertain order
- No issued ticket: do not treat a reservation request or payment attempt as travel. Check the order state once, then use the responsible channel's support or official railway path.
- Passenger-detail mismatch: stop before creating more conflicting records. Ask the order owner how to correct or cancel within its current deadline.
- Wrong station or unavailable train: use the alternative stations, dates, or trains you prepared, and keep lodging flexible until the transport path is credible.
- Station document problem: bring the original passport and order details to a staffed railway counter with extra time; the station's current announcement and staff instructions control.

Can a foreign visitor buy a China train ticket with a passport?
