Why Google Maps struggles

Two separate issues stack up. First, Google is blocked on Chinese networks, so Maps won't load at all on a local SIM without a VPN. Second, even when you do reach it, China's mapping rules shift coordinates, so the blue dot and roads can be noticeably misaligned — which makes it unreliable for turn-by-turn even via VPN.

Use these instead

Apple Maps works well in China for navigation and transit on an iPhone.
Amap (高德地图) has the best local detail and an English mode; Baidu Maps is the other major option.
Download an offline map of your city before you fly, as a no-data fallback.

If you want Google working anyway
