Can I withdraw cash from ATMs in China with a foreign card?

Check my payment setup

Find an eligible machine

  • Use an ATM that visibly displays the logo for your card organization.
  • Prefer a machine at an open bank branch or another controlled location where help is available.
  • A bank brand alone does not prove that a particular ATM accepts your particular card.
  • If the logo is absent or the machine rejects the card, do not keep retrying; use another marked machine or contact the issuer.

Confirm the card before travel

  • Ask the issuer whether cash withdrawal in China is enabled for the card and account.
  • Confirm the PIN format, daily and per-withdrawal limits, issuer fees, foreign-transaction fees, and the recovery route for a retained or blocked card.
  • Keep a separate payment method because issuer approval and ATM connectivity can fail even at a correctly marked machine.

Review the ATM screen

  • Read the withdrawal amount, machine fee, and any conversion offer before accepting the transaction.
  • If the ATM offers conversion into your home currency, compare it with being charged in RMB; the displayed terms control the choice, not a generic online estimate.
  • Take the card, cash, and receipt in the order the machine presents them, and do not leave until the session closes.
There is no trustworthy site-wide fee or withdrawal-limit number for every Chinese ATM and foreign card. The ATM and card issuer are the sources for the transaction in front of you.

Use cash as one recovery path

RMB cash can be a useful fallback when a wallet, card terminal, or data connection fails. Decide the amount from your actual first-day transport and lodging needs, and keep another payment route available rather than relying on one ATM withdrawal.
