Alipay vs. WeChat Pay: which should foreigners use in China?

Check whether your payment setup is ready

Answer five quick questions about your card, Alipay, WeChat Pay, backup, and timing. The checker gives you a setup path and what to test before you fly.

Check my payment setup

Choose the primary wallet by completed setup

  • Install the official app and complete only the registration, identity, and card steps it currently requests.
  • Confirm the exact eligible card appears linked or available, and ask its issuer how approval and recovery prompts will reach you.
  • Prefer the wallet that completes setup cleanly and fits the merchant or transport task you actually need; do not choose from a remembered popularity ranking.
  • Read the live fee, limit, currency, promotion, and verification prompt before approving a transaction.

Know where their paths differ

Official visitor guidance documents both wallets for mobile payment and shows different in-app entry paths for some transport services. Those examples establish supported visitor routes, not a permanent menu map. Follow the current product screen and the transport operator's instructions for the exact city and trip.

  • A successful card link is not a guarantee that a future issuer, wallet, merchant, or transport transaction will be approved.
  • A second wallet is not independent when both wallets depend on the same card, issuer, phone number, device, or data connection.
  • For a failure, read the message from the wallet, issuer, and merchant before retrying; switch to a genuinely separate route when possible.

Build a three-layer payment plan

  • Primary: the wallet and exact card whose current setup you have completed.
  • Secondary: another verified wallet or card route with fewer shared dependencies.
  • Emergency: RMB cash and a compatible marked-ATM route, with any issuer withdrawal requirements confirmed before departure.
Current official guidance supports visitor setup in both wallets, but the live wallet, issuer, merchant, and transaction terms remain final.

Common questions

Can foreigners register for both Alipay and WeChat Pay?

Current official visitor guidance says both support registration with a foreign or Chinese mobile number and binding eligible international cards after the required setup. Exact support remains account-, card-, issuer-, and product-specific.

Is having both wallets a complete payment backup?

Not necessarily. If both use the same card, issuer, phone, or data connection, one failure can affect both. Keep an independent cash or marked-ATM route.
