Why Google Maps struggles
Two separate issues stack up. First, Google is blocked on Chinese networks, so Maps won't load at all on a local SIM without a VPN. Second, even when you do reach it, China's mapping rules shift coordinates, so the blue dot and roads can be noticeably misaligned — which makes it unreliable for turn-by-turn even via VPN.
Use these instead
- Apple Maps works well in China for navigation and transit on an iPhone.
- Amap (高德地图) has the best local detail and an English mode; Baidu Maps is the other major option.
- Download an offline map of your city before you fly, as a no-data fallback.
If you want Google working anyway
