Is WhatsApp blocked in China?
Last updated 2026-05-31
What “blocked” means in practice
WhatsApp, along with most Meta and Google services, is unreachable over a normal Chinese mobile connection. The block covers text messages, voice notes, and calls. It has nothing to do with your account — it's about which network your traffic flows through.
The easiest fix: an international eSIM
Most travelers solve this without thinking about it by using an international roaming eSIM (Airalo, Holafly, Nomad, Saily). These route your data through a server outside mainland China, so WhatsApp, Google Maps, Gmail, and Instagram keep working the way they do at home — no VPN required.
Buy and install the eSIM at home, then activate it when you land.
The alternative: a VPN
If you'll use a local Chinese SIM instead, you'll need a VPN to reach WhatsApp. The catch: VPN apps are not downloadable inside China — the App Store hides them on a Chinese account and Google Play is blocked. Install and test your VPN before you fly.
Will people in China reach me on WhatsApp?
Probably not. In China almost everyone uses WeChat for messaging and calls. If you're coordinating with hotels, guides, or friends in China, install WeChat before departure — it's the channel they'll actually use.
